The Neutral Zone

A curated palette of neutrals is more than just white, beige, and grey tones. It can include a variety of off-whites, organic beige and clay tones, deep browns, and moody charcoals. People choose to decorate with neutrals because it feels safe. However, unless you are blessed with interesting architecture in your living space, a neutral décor can often fall flat and tend to be boring. Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind when entering the neutral zone.

Use Multiple Shades of the Same Color

A subtle scaffolding of the same shades of one color will help build the basis of your neutral look. Creating a soft, layered look of several neutral tones will convey a comforting feel to a living space while keeping the area open and full of light. This includes presenting those medium and richer tones of the same color by using various types of wood (think burlwood and mango wood) in furniture and accessories found within the room.

Use Touches of Black and Metal

The grounding effect of black adds depth and complexity to a neutral room. Small doses of black and a peppering of metals supplied in lamps, mirrors, vases, etc help to move the eye around the room keeping it from feeling one-dimensional.

Use Eye-catching Organic Shapes

From furniture to works of art, interesting shapes bring the neutral aesthetic to life. Organic shapes impart a sense of fluidity and harmony. These types of shapes consist of curves or irregular contours that can generate a feeling of warmth and authenticity in a neutral living space. The circle is often considered the most pleasing shape to the human eye, symbolizing unity, perfection, and symmetry. The seamless symmetry of the perfect circle is essential in bringing a sense of balance, calmness, and tranquility to neutral décor.

Use Tons of Texture

Texture plays probably the most important role in any interior, helping to elevate the space and bring depth and interest, but it's particularly important when decorating with neutrals.

Here are a few ways to add lots of texture to your neutral décor.

  • natural fiber rugs

  • woven baskets

  • nubby pillows and throws

  • texture on furniture

  • linen/burlap and patterned curtains

  • rattan and woven rugs

  • fringe

  • roughhewn beams

  • clay or potter lamps

  • marble countertops

  • plants

  • vintage pieces with interesting lines

When you enter the neutral zone, you are entering a universe of a timeless and enduring look where you can spend time with family, entertain guests, or simply enjoy a moment of peace and tranquility.
