Creating Captivating Tablescapes

Make the Jupe table by Sarreid even more gorgeous by adding a tablescape.

A well-dressed table provides a welcoming invite to your guests on any occasion. Creating a tablescape allows your personal style and design aesthetic to shine through even when your table is not in use. The following elements are the key to creating a captivating tablescape.

Consider the Event

A tablescape should convey a specific theme, mood, or experience. Is your event a wedding, a baby shower, a dinner party, or a family holiday meal? How many guests will attend? What food will be served? How will the food be served? Tablescapes can be simple with a few basic décor items, or they can be exceptionally complex and ornate depending on the event.

Choose a Color Scheme

The color scheme is essential to the overall feel of your tablescape. One option is to use different shades of one color, such as dark green and light green on top of a neutral base like off-white. Another suggestion would be to use three adjacent hues on a color wheel. Keep in mind that the color scheme of the tablescape should always exist in harmony with the color of the room.

Gather Materials

The following items should be included in any tablescape:

Essentials - dishes, silverware, charger plates, glassware, serving pieces, napkins, napkin rings, runner/tablecloth

Décor - candlesticks, candles, vases, art objects, flowers (including faux or natural branches and greenery), seasonal elements such as pumpkins, apples, pinecones, holiday lights, seasonal fabric such as gingham, etc.

Fun additions - place cards, menus, guest party favors

Fashion the Centerpiece

Lay the foundation with a runner or placemats, then add chargers and plates with napkins and napkin rings. (It’s important to visualize where the serving platters with food will be placed and save some space.)

Create your masterpiece! One tip is to use the designer’s rule of three. This rule argues that arrangements of three are the most visually appealing. For example, use three candleholders, three groups of vases with flowers, etc. Pay attention to scale in that your tablescape should be proportionate to the size of your table. If your display is too large or too tall it can prevent guests from interacting, and if it’s too small, it may not feel substantial enough for the table, lessening the overall aesthetic.

Try to include lots of textural elements in your design such as rattan chargers or woven placemats. Texture, layers, and patterns add complexity and interest to a tablescape. If your materials are all similar, the display can often feel flat.

Carry the Theme Throughout Your Home

If you need extra dining space, consider using the same theme outdoors for dining al fresco. Or, use a sideboard with a vignette theme that matches your tablescape for the extra serving platters or bottles of wine.
